Egypt: Between two evils 'tis not worth choosing

Publication time: Today at 14:31 Emirate time
The United States has been involved in the appointment of the head of Egyptian intelligence Omar Suleiman as the vice-president of embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, says former CIA analyst David MacMichael.

David MacMichael said that Mubarak and his surrogates appealed to Washington to confirm the nomination of Omar Suleiman to the post of vice-president of Egypt.

Suleiman in recent years had close ties with the United States and is known in Egypt as one of the CIA agents.

Former CIA analyst added that, if Suleiman comes to power and replaces Mubarak, he will enjoy U.S. support, as Mubarak enjoyed the support of the United States for 32 years of his dictatorship.

Hosni Mubarak is currently experiencing great pressure from the people's movement, and is on the verge of losing power.

David MacMichael casted doubt about any internal reform in Egypt, if Suleiman comes to power, and noted that in this case the transfer of power will take place peacefully and policy in Egypt regarding U.S. and "Israel" will not change. Of course, there would be no change in this case in Egypt, as Suleiman is one of the ideologues and architects of the dictatorship of Mubarak.

The fact that the CIA considering the Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman as main candidate for the top post in Egypt, if something happens to Hosni Mubarak, is confirmed in the documents published on the site WikiLeaks.

In the last 2 years, Suleiman emerged from the shadows, his pictures taken by journalists, reports about his meetings with foreign leaders are published.

It is to be noted also that judging by the developments, the U.S. plans to refine the updated dictatorship in Egypt by a face of ElBaradei, who in all the western media is represented as a "best alternative" for Mubarak.

It is possible that ElBaradei and Suleiman will go in tandem to create the illusion of change in the country.

According to the latest data, Barack Obama sent to Cairo the former U.S. ambassador to Egypt Frank Wisner to persuade Mubarak to begin formal negotiations on the issue of "free and fair elections".

"Wisner's arrival in Egypt intensified U.S. pressure on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to seek a political resolution to the weeklong protests in Cairo and other major cities by tens of thousands of people", said the newspaper Kansas City.
